The Birthplace of Barbaresco, now owned by the Stupino family (Anna, Giulio, Italo and Piera), Sole owners of the Santo Stefano vineyard, widely regarded as the best vineyard in Barbaresco, and source to such winemakers as Giacosa.
Castello di Neive has 60 hectares (150 acres) estate in the Neive town council, in the Langhe area of the Piedmont region. Twenty-five hectares (62 acres) of the property are destined to grape growing and all the production, which amounts to an average of 12.000 cases a year, is obtained from Castello di Neive’s own vineyards.
Italo Stupino has taken on the management of both the vineyards and the cellars under the name “Castello di Neive Azienda Agricola di Italo Stupino“. All the wine-making and ageing process takes place in the castle’s dungeons.
The vineyards are all situated in extremely favorable locations, with the best exposure to obtain great wines. The company’s aim is to give the highest attention in getting the most out of its production. To this extent, Castello di Neive is availing itself of the precious collaboration of the viticultural experts of the University of Turin and of the agronomist Dino Bevione. Thanks to their contribution, the company is carrying out interesting experiments aimed at achieving, for example, more color and bouquet from nebbiolo grapes.
In the cellars, the company’s own oenologist, Claudio Roggero, can rely on the external consultation of Professor Vincenzo Gerbi, head of the oenology department of the University of Turin, and of the oenologist Gian Franco Cordero, who provides the company with his own modern and well equipped Bi.Lab. Laboratory.
An old name is now one of the finest in Italy. With the 2004 and 2005 vintage, I predict Castello di Neive will be regarded as one of Italy’s greatest winerys.
“Castello di Neive and proprietor Italo Stupino own the Santo Stefano vineyard in Neive, without question one of the most storied sites in all of Piedmont. It was Bruno Giacosa, with his legendary Barbarescos of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, who first brought the world’s attention to these vines. Even today, when he is more focused on making wines from estate-grown fruit, Giacosa speaks o f Santo Stefano with reverence and awe, and lists it as the top vineyard in Barbaresco. Unfortunately until recently, Castello di Neive’s own wines have lagged considerably, but in recent years Stupino has brought on a new staff to work in the vineyards and in the cellar, and the results are striking. The word is still not out on Castello di Neive. In the US the distribution of these wines has been uneven, and they can be hard to find. Hopefully that will soon change. As an aside, the Castello makes for a fascinating visit. The aristocratic surroundings are somewhat of an anomaly in a winemaking culture defined by an abundance of small, artisanal growers.” – The Wine Advocate.
