14 Search Results For: Category - FINE WINES OF SOUTHERN ITALY
The Volcanic soils from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna produce some of the most unique fine wine bargains in the world. Steeped in thousands of years of history with roots in ancient Greece (Aglianico stems from Ellenico), the long established region of Campania and the newly resurgent island of Sicily provide an exciting new dimension to your fine wine travels. Here are some of the regions to look for:
Taurasi: This is a famed district for red wine in the hills outside of Naples. Planted at high elevations with Aglianico, this region is one of the last to harvest in all of Italy despite is southern locale. The resulting wines are often known as the Barolo of the South. Full bodied, aromatic, with massive extract of fruits and acids
Fiano di Avellino: One of the finest whites in all of Italy is also produced on the volcanic slopes outside Naples. Famed even in Roman times, this wine can provide honeyed aromas, juicy richness, with clarity of extract that can endure aging
Etna Rosso: As one would expect, these are reds from the slopes of the active volcano Etna. These vineyards are some of the highest in Europe (up to one thousand meters) and are often the last in Italy to be harvested. Once thought to be the gates of hell, these volcanic soils planted mainly in Nerello Mascalese produce damn good wine.
Cerasuolo di Vittoria: The only DOC in Sicily, the wines here at there best provide Burgundian cherry aromas with southern warmth
Here is a choice selection from some of the top producers of the Region. These growers seek to bring out the true regional character of their wines, without losing out on the benefits of modern winemaking. Moreover, most are either certified or practicing organic, as a further reflection upon their respect for place and quality. Each wine is a wonderful tribute to its region through aroma, taste, and finish, and will surely enhance your meals either State side, or on Capri.....
